Choose The Lighter Load

This week we joined the British Parliament as it paid tribute to one of its own Mrs Jo Cox who was brutally murdered in the course of her duties. As I listened to speaker after speaker one thing came out clear she had chosen the lighter load which was to love not just her neighbour but her neighbour\’s neighbour as well. Why then would someone want to end the life of such a person?

You see afew weeks ago I listened to a sermon where our Pastor made sense of the scripture which says \”Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them\”. Our Pastor went to great lengths to take us through different scriptures to enable us see what Jesus meant when he said these words. We all know that  Jesus came so we have fulfilled lives not just eternally but here on earth as well.  I cannot help but come to the conclusion that God had realised that the load he had given us through the Ten Commandments was too heavy for us. We were in dare need of relief and that is why Jesus summarised the law by saying \”Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments\”. This means once you love God and your neighbour then you have fulfilled all the Commandments.

There is too much hatred in the world today, which is birthed over things that make no sense at all. Take the example of the late Jo Cox what wrong had she done other than doing her work and trying to make this world a better place for so many. But suddenly her two little children will have to grow up with just a memory of her. People are often driven to do all sorts of wrong because they are searching for answers to fill the void that exists in their souls. They have chosen to carry heavy loads and yet we have a choice of a lighter load. Jesus clearly offers us this choice when he says \”come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light\”.

This week I implore you to search your soul. Do you have a load that is too heavy for your to carry? For a change try choosing the lighter load and see how much relief you will get.
